Chapter 15

Grace

“Shane O’Sullivan has been found,” Dad announces over breakfast a few days later.

I’m only half listening because I have no idea what the boys do when they leave this house, so I’m sure Shane O’Sullivan has nothing to do with me. Roscoe is snoozing softly in my arm, his bottom resting on my lap, milk drunk after his morning feed. My other hand clasps a plastic purple spoon, outstretched in offering to my toddler, porridge with berries on the end of it.

River in his highchair, sits beside me at the kitchen table, his little fist reaching out, he scoops the breakfast off the end of the spoon and slaps it over his closed mouth. Dark brown eyes looking at me with confusion when he realises his mouth is empty. With the spoon, I swipe it off of his lips, his chin, re-offer it this time only once he opens his mouth.

Atlas is upstairs with Hunter, wanting to talk to his dad about boy things. I’m not really sure what that means, but I’m not a boy so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Thorne and Wolf sit in their usual seats on either side of Dad, Arrow beside Wolf, Raine beside Thorne, an empty seat between Arrow and I. I pass River the spoon, giving up on trying to feed him the last little bit of his breakfast, he just wants to bang the spoon like he’s playing the drums, he’ll eat when he’s hungry. Finger smoothing down the length of Roscoe’s nose, his lips parted, arms thrown above his head, little foot twitching inside orange striped socks, he snores softly. My hand continuing to smooth over his little features, head of black hair, so fluffy and thick.

“Outside of the Kelly’s largest safe house,” Dad continues, knife and fork scraping over the china of his plate.

Arrow reaches across, placing a glass in front of me, filling it with cranberry juice. I tilt my head in thanks, a kind smile on my brother’s face before he returns his attention back to Dad.

“Decapitated head displayed on a pike.”

The clattering of cutlery halts, an eerie silence falling over the room. Wolf looks up, Thorne does too, but they glance at each other before they look at Dad. I tilt my head, watching them both, Arrow and Raine staring silently at Dad. It feels uncomfortable, the heaviness in the room and I look to the head of our family for something, because Hunter’s not here and Arrow isn’t giving me reassurance. But Dad isn’t looking at me.

His black eyes are entirely focused on his eldest son, and it feels as though everyone around the table is suddenly waiting, for what though, I’m not quite sure. And then, just as quickly, the tension in the room seems to bleed out, like someone sliced right through it, squeezed the wound, sucked the poison out. Arrow looks at me, smiling again, his plush lips pulled up higher on one side than the other, like it feels a little strained to be doing it.
